Children's Rights: Right or Wrong?

The UNCRC sets out the rights that should be available to all children. Article 32 of the UNCRC states that children have the right to protection from work that harms them, and is bad for their health and education. Throughout the first half term, we explored how, with the introduction of the Children's Acts, our rights have improved and developed over time. We compared our rights today, particularly linked to our education, to children living in the Victorian era. Supported by the classic text 'Oliver Twist', we explored, and appreciated, how children's rights have developed over time. At the end of the project, each child  contributed to a book for parents and visitors to the school, about what makes Manor Field so Rights Respecting.

Who are the Rogues?

During this project, the children will understand that the choices people make in life will impact upon other people’s views of them. They will explore and ask questions about the perceptions they make and hold of others. English will be driven by the powerful book ‘The Highwayman’, where children will take part in performance poetry, building upon their skills of intonation, tone, volume and increasing fluency when reading aloud. We will then write from the viewpoint of our very own ‘rogue’. Through art, we will explore wax resist and tie-dye, using different materials, and we will use chalk and charcoal to re-create a scene from ‘The Highwayman’. In PE, we will work in groups to create our own ‘Pirate Dance’, using our expressions and body language to convey different behaviours and emotions. PSHE will be the basis for discussions around different images of people and what these then represent. To conclude this topic, the children will be performing a chosen piece of learning to an audience, illustrating the importance of perception and how we must get to know a person before forming an opinion about them.
