Autumn 1

All About Us

The children will arrive into their new classroom and begin to become familiar with their new surroundings and start to build relationships with new adults. The children will start to become accustomed to the Year 1 expectations whilst completing challenges both independently and with an adult whilst also experiencing the familiarity of Discovery Time. They will be introduced to Jazzy Jobs and write a job description to ensure that the classroom is kept tidy and develop roles and responsibilities for their learning environment.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

The children will experience a bear hunt in the grounds of the school, following a map, which will guide them into the meadow where they will find the class bear. Using Geography as a key driver the children will look at maps to explore the local area and have the opportunity to draw their own map of the bear’s journey using locational and directional language. This project will focus on high quality texts ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, ‘Bear Flies High’, ‘The Bear in the Cave’ and We’re Going on a Lion Hunt’ as well as looking at key poetry from the ‘Wild’ anthology and ‘Ice Bear’ by Nicola Davies. The children will immerse themselves into the project by unpicking the key language before eventually creating their own versions of the story. Finally, the children will share their own stories with their Year 1 peers and their teddy bears at a teddy bears picnic using the scenes created as a back-drop.

Autumn 2

Pumpkin Soup

The children discover a tuff tray with a range of different Autumnal objects, the book Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper and a range of autumnal items and ingredients. On reading the story the children discover that the animals needed to work as a team to make the soup.  Could we try to make soup for an Autumn celebration? What do we need to learn and do?
